Ruari is basically a genetic accident.  She is the result of testing in the Cinnabar Labs, where scientists were trying to create a mixture of human and Pokemon genes.  Ruari is a mixture of a human and a Dratini, allowing her to turn from a human into a Pokemon at will (and sometimes by accident when she gets really upset or emotional or loses consciousness (which is semi-often).  Being a clone, basically, she has no family.  She and Danae, a Mereep/human hybrid (who later evolved into an Ampharos), were raised by the scientists on Cinnabar and they grew up together.  However, they didn't get along too well because Danae more or less ignored Ruari, even though Ruari wanted to be closer to her "sister".  When the scientist who was taking care of them the most passed away, Danae was 20 and therefore old enough to be Ruari's guardian.  So they moved to Chartreuse nearby, became gym leaders, lived in the gym, and there Ruari remained until Aoife-tachi found her.  She's also a bit of a space case, not that she's ditzy (quite the contrary), just eccentric.  She has obsessive-compulsive disorder, and there are certain things (such as getting a copy of the Pokemon Gazette, doing a certain yoga routine, drinking kiwi juice, etc.)  that she has to do every day as part of a routine.  Otherwise she...well, no one really knows what would happen if she _didn't_ do them, because she always has, but Aoife-tachi have a feeling that the results wouldn't be too positive if she didn't.  She also, like Aidan, has an odd fascination with Bill and Brock, sort of a hero-worship thing.  Not that she's boy-crazy, she just has a thing for those two in particular.  She's liberal almost to an extreme, and she's not a lesbian or even bisexual but she still has a girlfriend: Petra.  But she doesn't believe in any of that sexual orientation stuff, she thinks that love is love no matter what gender the involved parties are. 

Appearance 
Wavy lavender hair, a little past shoulder length, like Michiru from Sailormoon, usually with a curl hanging partially in front of her left eye.  She has green eyes, and she wears a dark purple tank top with a long-sleeved black shirt over it, green pants, and a green stone around her neck on a leather cord with a little letter R engraved in it 

Pokemon 
Dragonair: its name is Ronan, and the scientists in the Cinnabar labs assigned it to Dratini-Ruari as a mate.  But Ruari became friends with Ronan and thought it would be too weird to mate with him.  Ronan is just a normal Dragonair, not a hybrid, but Ruari can talk to him through telepathy. 
Gyarados: Ruari's first Pokemon was a Magikarp, which Danae (as a Mereep) would always beat the @*$% out of and make fun of.

Relationships with the others 
Aoife: Ruari admires her for being one determined little kid, and feels sorry for her when she gets into one of her underconfident moods, but Aoife annoys her sometimes. 
Petra: Her girlfriend, of course, and they do make a really good couple.  They have their issues, of course, like any normal couple would, but they're very compatible and at the end of the day they manage to sort everything out. 
Fawn: she actually feels sorry for her, because she's figured out that Fawn is really just jealous of Aoife and feels insecure and that's why she brags all the time. 
Sora: Ruari thinks she's fun to be around and gets along with her pretty well. 
Aidan: they're not in too many episodes together, otherwise they'd have a lot to talk about.  Not that they don't anyway, but if they were in more episodes they'd get more chances to "bond". 
Ferio: Ruari had sort of a hero-worship thing for her at first, she thought she was really cool, but after seeing how Ferio treated Aidan she admired her less. 
Team Rocket: doesn't understand how they can steal Pokemon without feeling guilty, especially since they're actually nice people once you get to know them and they're just in TR because their parents are.  Except for Sundance, of course. 
Ermynne: Didn't figure out about Ermynne's crush on Aoife until it was pointed out to her, but didn't like her too much before that.  After she found out Ermynne was a lesbian too she could relate to her a little more.

 Real name: Ruari Dragyn 
Japanese name: Ryuunome Ruri
Meaning: Her first name I dunno what it means, and Dragyn is just a play on dragon (also it was going to be the English name for Dragonair).  Her first name is basically pronounced "Rory", which is why people call her "Ro" sometimes.  Ryuunome (which is her family name) means "eyes of the dragon," and Ruri means lapis lazuli (and also happens to be spelled close to her English name).
